Local pricing and availability for Nokia 5 and 6 confirmed

The new Nokia 3310: cute but crummy

HMD Global, the company that’s resurrected the Nokia marque, has confirmed that the Nokia 5 will go on sale in South Africa on 28 June 2017 at a recommended retail price of R3,000. The Nokia 6 will follow in late July and cost R3,700. The Nokia 3 went on sale locally on 7 June for R2,000.

While it’s the revamped Nokia 3310 that’s been grabbing headlines, we’re far more exciting by the Nokia 5 and 6, mid-range devices that look and feel the part of higher-end ones, and that promise a fairly vanilla (and regularly updated) take on Google’s Android mobile operating system.

The Nokia 3310 undoubtedly makes for stronger headlines and great magazine covers, but with its lack of Wi-Fi, 2G-only connectivity and limited storage it’s not a phone anyone should actually buy. It’s a marketing masterstroke, but beneath the hype the 3310 is a disappointment sugarcoated in nostalgia.

Keys specs for the Nokia 6 include a 5.5in full-HD screen wrapped in an aluminium unibody, Dolby Atmos sound and dual speakers, and a 16MP primary camera and front-facing 8MP snapper. It’ll be offered in South Africa in black, silver or blue.

The Nokia 5, meanwhile, offers the same aluminium finish, a 5.2in HD display, and a 13MP rear camera and 8MP front-facer. It’ll arrive in black, silver, blue and copper.
