The Android-packing VAIO Phone A looks gorgeous (but you can’t have it)

The VAIO brand, back when Sony was in control of it, was known for attractive design — we still think fondly of those super-thin notebooks (because we don’t remember what it was like to type on the blasted things). It makes sense that the resurrected brand would stick with what made them distinctive. Hence, the awfully handsome VAIO Phone A.

The Phone A is actually a reissue of sorts, as the original aluminium smartphone was a Windows Phone device. The company has made Phone A with the specs largely unchanged, with a Snapdragon 617 processor, 3GB of RAM, and a 5.5in display. Except they’ve turfed the mostly-defunct Windows Phone OS in favour of Android 6.0. Not bad specs for a phone that looks better than just ‘okay’, though it puts this handset solidly in the mid-range.

But before you start drooling too hard, the VAIO Phone A, like most of VAIO’s other products of late, is confined to Japan only for now. It’ll be selling for the local equivalent of about R2,800 when it launches on 7 April so if you have friends or family on that side of the world, you know how much cash to reserve for them. For the rest of us, we’re going to have to go all high school on this one and worship from afar.
