Want to make an iPhone better? Attach the Eye, an Android phone-case… thing

The Apple iPhone is already almost a perfect phone. At this point, you need to add an Android to it or something to improve it. Or at least change it. Funny you should say that… Enter the X1 Eye, a new case for the iPhone that is being funded through crowdfunding portal Kickstarter.

The X1 Eye, otherwise known as the Eye, is a case for the iPhone 7 (or 8, if you’re willing to wait) but it’s so much more than that. The case includes a 5in display, space for microSD cards, its own battery capacity, a headphone jack, and wireless charging. Add capacity for SIM cards and Android and it’d be it’s own phone. Wait, this iPhone case has that too.

The Eye, then, is basically an Android phone that you put an iPhone into. We’re not sure why you’d want to do that but, judging by how many folks have thrown money at this one, obviously people do. The concept does have some attraction — being able to switch from Apple’s iOS to Android by flipping the phone lights up the nerdy parts of our brain but essentially stapling two different phones together also feels… weird. Still, we’d give it a shot.

The X1 Eye is available from Kickstarter from $95 (R1,260) but this is one of several tiers of early pricing and doesn’t cover the 4G model. The retail price for the iPhone case/phone/enhancement will start from $189 (R2,500).  Which, if you’re intrigued, is quite the discount.

And in case you were wondering, the Eye has been funded so it should be coming to market some time in September this year, barring delays and other screw-ups, like the company behind it failing to deliver. That does occasionally happen with Kickstarter although the project has, at the time of writing, raised $108,000 of a $95,000 target. Seems there are more iPhone users curious about Android and willing to take a risk than even we thought.
