Nokia is back, will start making Android devices in 2017

Nokia’s back in action, and that’s official. Nokia and a company called HMD Global Oy last week finalised a 10-year deal that will see Finland-made smartphones re-entering the market. You know, now that Microsoft’s finished their attempt at being the brand.

That’s the short version, anyway, which ultimately ends with Nokia-branded smartphones (and tablets) hitting the market in 2017. We’re not told anything about the planned hardware, only that the incoming lineup “…will focus on innovation, quality and experience, alongside the iconic Nokia mobile phone attributes of design, robustness, and reliability.” A lauable aim, but we’ll be most excited once we’ve had a look at what Nokia: Take Two has to offer.

The arrangment is set to be somewhat different this time around. Windows Phone doesn’t seem to be much of a thing and the new devices are going to be running Android — they’re quite specific about that — but there are also changes to how the phones are going to be manufactured and distributed. Next year’s Nokia is set to be a different animal.

It’s only populated with the colourful feature phones you can see above, for the moment, but everywhere there are reminders that the company will be coming out with Android handsets soon.
