Xiaomi’s not done – here is the Xiaomi Mi 5s in all its brightly-lit glory

We really can’t conceal the fact that we’re oddly fond of Xiaomi’s smartphones — and most of their other products, come to that. The newly-revealed Xiaomi Mi 5s is just another addition to the list of ‘Xiaomi kit that we like’, by the look of things.

And the Mi 5s isn’t alone. The Xiaomi Mi 5s Plus has also been announced. Gee, we wonder where we’ve heard this naming scheme before…?

No matter, here’s what you can expect from either smartphone. The Mi 5s is a 5.1-inch smartphone with a 1080p display. There are few surprises there, except that there are no buttons. On the phone’s face, at least. There’s a fingerprint sensor but it has been built into the handset’s glass panels — kinda like we’re expecting Apple’s Home button to do next year.

The Mi 5s sports a Snapdragon 821 processor and either 3GB RAM/64GB storage or 4GB RAM/128GB storage. There’s a new 12MP Sony CMOS sensor doing duty in the phone’s camera, along with a dual-tone flash.

The Mi 5s Plus uses the same processor and camera sensor but has a dual camera system (shades of Apple?), 4GB/64GB or 6GB/128GB RAM-storage configurations and a 5.7-inch display. Guess that ‘Plus’ isn’t there for decoration.

Xiaomi’s new handsets are supposed to go on sale in China from today, so the first phones should have already changed hands by the time that you read this. International releases haven’t been announced yet but given that we’re still waiting on the Mi 5’s arrival, it’s likely to be a little while.
