For when you really need your space – Meet SanDisk’s new 1TB SD card

We’ve all seen what an SD card looks like, right? It’s the larger one, about three times larger than a first-gen SIM card, that only works with certain devices. Chances are you have one at home (or at least an adaptor that lets you scale up a microSD) but you probably don’t have anything like SanDisk’s newest baby. That’s because this baby… isn’t that small.

sandisk-1tbSanDisk at this week’s Photokina in Cologne, Germany, took the wraps off its newest storage addition. That’s be the company’s 1TB SDXC card, a prototype of portable storage hardware that is being designed with 4K (and even 8K) video in mind. Have you seen how much space uncompressed 4K video takes up?

It’s a good thing that SanDisk is giving up a colossal amount of storage, then, even if it has been compressed into a size that we wouldn’t have guessed at a few years back. The new 1TB SDXC card is twice the size of their existing monster, a 512GB SD card that’ll set you back around R5,000. So… we’re guessing that there’s a R10k price tag, at least, on this sliver of plastic.

As mentioned though, the SanDisk 1TB SDXC card is only a prototype for now, though it’s expected to hit the market soon enough. The company isn’t saying exactly when but we’ll let you know just as soon as they spill the beans.
