Take a look at the well-specced Xiaomi Redmi Note 4

Xiaomi has been busy. Whether they’re making their first notebook or an electric bicycle, the Chinese company is making inroads into all sorts of tech spheres. But it’s in the smartphone world that they’re most prominent and the announcement of the Redmi Note 4 just increases their profile.

The new handset, the Chinese version of which was announced last week, is hanging on to the metal unibody used by the Redmi Note 3 but is incorporating a few design changes that make the phone — in images, at least — look more like it comes from HTC’s stable than ever. But the specs list is what we’re most interested in and Xiaomi is hoping to lift eyebrows there.

Inside the Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 you’re going to find a MediaTek Helio X20 processor. That’s a 10-core chip that will be backed by either 2GB or 3GB of RAM, 16GB/64GB storage options and microSD support. Oh, and a monster 4,100mAh battery. The handset will ship with a rear fingerprint sensor, similar to the Note 3’s effort, and a 13MP/5MP camera arrangement. That’s a pity, because it’s not much of a change from its predecessor’s snapper setup.

Android 6.0 Marshmallow is going to be available out of the box, underneath the company’s MIUI 8.0 skin. This is going to be the major point of contention for a local launch as the phone’s arrival is likely to be somewhat delayed. An upgrade to Nougat in the interim would be nice, Xiaomi…

Does the Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 have what it takes to impress the pants off us? If the past two handsets in the line are any indication then we should have our hair blown back. Or ruffled a little in the breeze, at the very least. The handset has only been confirmed for China so far but it should make its way over to South African shores and stores soon.
