We’ve been hearing about Nintendo’s NX console for a long time but the actual details of Nintendo’s upcoming hardware have been light on the ground. We thought that Apple was good at keeping its mouth shut… but a new report claims to shed some light on the Nintendo NX and, if true, Ninty’s new addition is going to be a hybrid console.
That is, it’ll be capable of being played on the go, in the vein of the Nintendo 3DS or the fading PlayStation Vita, while also retaining the ability to work on a TV as a full-fledged console. Of sorts.
The reasoning for the detachable controls are so that users can place the NX screen, which will also house the main brains of the console, into a dock which will allow it to connect to a TV.
What could be changing is the delivery method for Nintendo games. The company is thought to be shifting completely to cartridges for NX, though a disc-based version of most titles should be available for the Wii U, at least to start. What won’t happen is backwards compatibility between the Wii, Wii U and NX. If they’re leaving out optical drives, that’s sort of a no-brainer.
The design suggested in the (unconfirmed) report makes sense, as it’s a merging of the Wii U’s screen-toting gamepad and the 3DS. We can see Nintendo going this route but we’d really like to hear it from an official source before going full believer on it. Nintendo is “…unable to comment on the various rumours and speculations circulating” at present. We honestly aren’t too bothered about what they make, as long as we’re able to play games like Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild on it.
