There’s gold in them thar phones – Apple recovered $40 million in gold from old devices

Who said that recycling doesn’t pay? Apple certainly doesn’t. Apple recycles, a lot, and last week the company released a report detailing what they have recycled and the company has managed to make money doing that, too.

The company recycled 2,204 pounds of gold, taken from old computers and mobile devices, according to the report. That’s just under a ton of gold, valued at a little under $40 million. And that gold was just lying around in old hardware, in case you need an extra reminder.

All told the company recycled around 27.8 million kilograms of material, including steel, plastic, glass, aluminium, silver, copper and lead, among other materials. That’s a whole lot of components right there, and it’s also a gigantic whack of e-waste that isn’t going to be clogging up a landfill. Now, about that other e-waste piles… we’re thinking it might be time to stock up on dead PCs.
