Samsung testing Galaxy S7 variants with Helio X20 and X25 chips

Samsung are supposed to be making fewer phones but apparently having a whole bunch of versions of handsets with the same name doesn’t count. That’s the impression we’re getting from benchmark results, spotted in the wild, which show that Samsung are testing two new types of their Galaxy S7.

What’s even more unusual is that these handsets, which bear markings in their serial number suggesting that they’re bound for Canada, are leaving behind Exynos and Qualcomm for something a little different: MediaTek’s Helio processors. Specifically the Helio X20 and X25.

The difference between the X20 and the X25 is that the X25 is overclocked, with both MediaTek Helio processors featuring ten cores. These cores allow the MediaTek chips to match the performance of Samsung’s own Exynos 8890 silicon, according to SamMobile.

The ten-core Helio X20 is also destined for HTC’s One A9, according to reports, and this could be good news for HTC fans. The question we’re really waiting to see answered is whether ten cores are going to be better than eight in practise.
