Here’s when you can get a Xiaomi smartphone in SA, plus what it’ll cost

We’ve known for a while that Xiaomi would be launching two handsets in South Africa, the Mi 4 and the Redmi 2. Both are low-cost handsets, with a build and specifications list that belie the cost. We have had an approximate launch date for the phones in Nigeria since last week and now there’s South African confirmation.

You’ll be able to get your hands on a fresh new Xiaomi for the first time at the end of November. Between 22 and 28 November, according to distributor Mobile In Africa (MIA) Group. The vague dating is likely to give MIA some wiggle-room regarding the launch.

Costs for the handsets are as we’ve been expecting for some time. The Redmi 2 will cost users R2,000 at launch, the Mi 4 will cost R4,000. Both prices are in line with incoming Nigerian pricing.

If it’s specifications and reviews you’re looking for, look no further. We’ve already had some hands-on time with both the Redmi 2 and the Mi 4 from Xiaomi and the results are… good. Very good.
