Sony and Quantic Dream reveal Detroit: Become Human

YouTube player

We’ve got a love-love-hate thing going with Sony-exclusive developer Quantic Dream at the moment. Their Fahrenheit (also know as Indigo Prophecy) and Heavy Rain releases were incredible, Beyond: Two Souls was a little less so. But when David Cage and co. are not making games, they’re also making tech demos for Sony.

We saw the Dark Sorcerer at E3 in 2013, which was great, but it was the Kara Tech Demo in 2012 for the PlayStation 3 that really impressed everyone. All this history has a point – the wishes of just about everyone who saw Kara come to life are going to come true with the announcement of Detroit: Become Human. Which happened last night, by the way.

Telling the story of Kara, an artificial human who escapes whatever programming makes these androids, which are everywhere, docile, Detroit: Become Human will explore what it means to be human. We saw the potential for this story in 2012 and it’s going to be the execution that’s important here. If Quantic Dream gives us another on-rails experience the story alone might be enough to make Detroit enthralling.

We still don’t know when Sony and Quantic are going to debut Detroit though, so expect it to arrive in 2016 or 2017 – unless they’ve managed to keep development under wraps since 2012… in which case, a surprise release would a nice surprise.
