Light Start – Afrihost, the Gear S2, Ford GT testing, Deus Ex and the world’s largest digital camera

Afrihost – A very empty photo essay

Afrihost headerWhere does your internet come from? Ours comes from a vast collection of hamsters running on wheels which translate keyboard presses into kinetic movement. This is transferred via morse code to a parchment that is carried via albatross to the nearest post office. For everyone else, there’s the good ole ISP and here’s what it looks like inside Afrihost. Hit the jump to see a very early-morning photo essay.

Samsung gets tired of teasing, makes the Gear S2 smartwatch official

Samsung have been teasing their Gear S2 smartwatch for a while, letting it show up in odd places and get the conversation started. But they’d decided to quit teasing just long enough to make it official, with two models on the way. The Gear S2 and the Gear S2 classic are your Tizen-powered wristwear options, which will run 360m x 360 1.2-inch displays and offer users notifications, fitness tracking and 3G, in at least one case. There’s still info missing but Samsung plans on fixing that come 3 September at IFA.

You’ll hear it WAY before you see it: The Ford GT gets some track-time

If the sound of this Ford GT, modelled on the 1960 legal vehicle of the same pedigree, doesn’t give you at least a chill or two this Tuesday morning then you might want to lay off the coffee or get out from under the heater. It was caught in action running laps at Sebring International Raceway, practising for the 2016 FIA WEC and IMSA WeatherTech Sportscar Championship events where the updated GT will make its debut. That burbling engine… wow.

Deus Ex: Mankind Divided has an unusual pre-order concept going

Deus Ex: Mankind Divided is a game of choice. And robotic enhancement, if you’re into extreme body modification (hint – lobe-stretching is considered tame here). And the upcoming stealth-action-diplomacy-kill-everything game will be hitting the market come 23 February 2016. In the meantime, there’s some pre-order oddness. The more folks order in advance, the better the pre-order options gets for everyone. Eventually, gamers can unlock an early release. Let’s see how the internet likes this one.

They’re going to be building the world’s largest digital camera (at 3.2 gigapixels)

Cellphones! Compacts! SLRs! And everything in between! You’re about to take one hell of a beating. And that’s because the world’s largest digital camera has just see the go-ahead for construction. And ‘construction’ is the right word because the 3.2-gigapixel camera that has just been approved is destined to live at the heart of the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope, taking photos of the night sky from Cerro Pachón in Chile. The pictures taken of the southern skies will take place over a ten-year period, with potentially billions of objects identified. But there’s a wait, the project will become active in 2022. Yes, there will be #filters.
