Nokia will reportedly be detailing a VR project next week

The race is on for virtual reality and even though some contenders have started late, they’re still hoping to get into the running. The newest contestant, according to a report from Re/Code, will be Nokia. The company will be revealing a virtual reality project, which will consist of some type of VR hardware, at a Los Angeles event next week.

Nokia Technologies, the arm behind the company’s Nokia N1 tablet, is responsible for the new VR hardware but that’s about all we know at this point. There’s no indication whether Nokia will be joining Sony, Microsoft, Oculus and the rest in unveiling a VR headset or whether their ambitions lie elsewhere.

All we really have to go on is a comment by Nokia CEO Rajeev Suri at a recent shareholders meeting which made mention of “immersive imaging”, which would suggest a headset of some type. But even then, it’s a vague suggestion. When queried, Nokia representatives declined to comment on the report.
