Marshall introduces London, their first smartphone

Marshall conjures up thoughts of the stage, with sweaty people holding musical instruments entertaining large crowds in the darkness. And more than a few beers. That’s our experience with Marshall and their amps but the company also makes headphones. Speakers is where they live, after all.

Marshall LondonAnd now Marshall Headphones have unveiled a smartphone. Don’t panic though, it’s a music-oriented smartphone called the London. As you’d expect, the sound is what is important and that’s why Marshall have given their first smartphone dual front-facing speakers, dual headphone ports – so you can share your music or movies, we guess – and a very on-stage scroll wheel for volume control. The London has its own processor for music, part of a Wolfson WM8281 Audio Hub sound card, so it should be loud and clear, up to the FLAC format.

Elsewhere, the Marshall London is unremarkable. The display is a 4.7-inch 720p IPS panel, the processor is a Snapdragon 410, a 1.2GHz quad, and there’s 16GB of storage and 2GB of system RAM. Since this is a music phone, there’s a microSD slot available.

Bluetooth 4.1, WiFi a/b/g/n, 3G and LTE are all features of the London, there’s an 8MP/2MP camera option and Marshall have included a removable 2,500mAh battery to boot.

It won’t be that cheap though, it’ll set buyers back approximately R7,300 or so when it launches in August. It’s available for pre-order at the moment and the London will also ship worldwide. Could be worth a listen.
