BlackBerry reported to be working on an Android smartphone

If BlackBerry makes an Android phone, is it a BlackBerry or is it an Android? That’s the sort of question we might have to answer soon, as reports claim that the Canadian smartphone outfit is considering outfitting an upcoming device with the Android OS.

Reuters, citing sources that asked not to be named, reports that such a decision would be calculated to help BlackBerry focus on other matters – specifically software and device management. Odds are that BlackBerry’s enterprise software would still make its way to such an Android device – they’re not out to wholly promote Google’s OS, after all.

As for what we could expect an Android-toting BlackBerry handset to look like, a slide-phone – teased by the company in April this year – could be the vehicle for this unprecedented event. Though we’re still not sure whether this is actually a thing. If it is, we can expect it to arrive later this year.

When asked for comment, BlackBerry said “We don’t comment on rumors and speculation, but we remain committed to the BlackBerry 10 operating system, which provides security and productivity benefits that are unmatched.”
