Samsung teases wireless charging for the Galaxy S6

A recent Samsung blog post suggests the Galaxy S6 could feature wireless charging tech built-in, negating the need for an optional case.

The blog post, titled “Wireless Smartphone Charging as an Industry Standard”, gives clues right from the off, by mentioning Nikola Tesla and his invention of wireless transferring energy.

Previous Galaxy smartphones had the ability to benefit from wireless charging, but only when an optional case was fitted.

The post mentions how wireless charging has evolved over recent years: by becoming more efficient, while component prices have dropped. The Galaxy S4 charging pads for example, used 80 components while the pads for the S5 used just 50.

Samsung also says how in 2014, components that supported multiple wireless charging standards on a single chip were released. Such components take between 6 – 12 months to show up in consumer devices, meaning we’ll see them in 2015.

It’s the last line of the release that fuels the most speculation though: “With our upcoming Galaxy smartphones, users will be able to enter a new wireless world like never before.” If the S6 doesn’t come with wireless charging now, we’ll eat our own processor chips.

This release ties in nicely with the recent leak of a Galaxy S6 case that suggests the upcoming flagship will no longer feature a removable back panel or battery. The leak also suggests the size of the battery has changed from 2800mAh to 2600mAh, meaning you could find yourself needing to charge a little more than usual. Samsung’s newer, more efficient Exynos processor could make up for it however, by sipping on less power.

With wireless charging becoming more popular, and overseas companies such as Starbucks and McDonalds rolling out charging plates in stores, Samsung’s decision definitely makes sense.
