This fully assembled virtual reality headset shell promises to out-cardboard Google

Oculus Rift. Project Morpheus. And now Microsoft’s crazy HoloLens. The techosphere is fast filling up with ways for us to escape from our boring bland reality and inject it with virtual excitement.

The thing is, it’s getting a little expensive.

Google has already offered an alternative to expensive headsets with its Cardboard project, but having tried to make one ourselves, we can safely say that it’s not something you can whip up in five minutes.

Not only do you have to buy a few lenses and magnets, but the end result looks like something a five-year-old would craft for a homemade Halloween costume. At least that’s how well our attempt turned out.

Gateway Interactive, a UK-based company from Hull, wants to make life easier for tech fans by introducing an alternative to Google Cardboard – one that’s not only more durable and more comfortable, but is delivered fully-assembled without requiring any extra parts.

Unlike Google Cardboard, which is made from, well, cardboard, VISR is crafted from laminated corrugate and has an improved design which excludes more light, and is more comfortable to boot.

It arrives flat-packed and is designed to cradle a variety of phones of all shapes and sizes, with a larger option also available for larger devices like the iPhone 6 Plus.

Of course, a product like this is only as good as the apps that support it, but Gateway Interactive is hoping that widespread adoption of its headset will spur developers to create more and more compatible VR apps and games.
