Farewell Apple iPhone 5c, it was nice knowing you

Apple’s world is set to get a little less colourful, with reports claiming that its iPhone 5c could be for the chop.

iPhone 5CTaiwan’s Industrial and Commercial Times claims that Apple will halt production of the its cheaper, plastic iPhone with suppliers Wistron and Foxconn sometime in “mid 2015” – meaning that sales of the iPhone 5c will eventually be discontinued.

There’s no indication in the report as to why Apple is planning to do away with the iPhone 5c, though it could indicate that Apple intends to streamline its iPhone range; the iPhone 5c is the only model currently on sale that doesn’t feature a Touch ID fingerprint sensor.

Other sources suggest that the iPhone 5c’s dwindling sales may be a factor – in an earnings call in January, Apple revealed that sales of the device were “lower than expected” while iPhone 5s sales had surpassed projections. The leak comes off the back of a report by KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who claims that the iPhone 5c and iPhone 4s will not be made after late 2015.

Now that the newer iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus have been released, the iPhone 5s has effectively replaced the iPhone 5c as the cost-effective option for buyers looking to pick up an Apple device. So if you’re an Apple fan who wants a little colour in your life, you’ll need to snap up an iPhone 5c soon; or resign yourself to a palette of silver, gold or space grey.
