Nixie is a flying wearable camera because why the heck not?

We’ve seen fitness wearables and wrist-based smartphone companions, now it’s time for something completely different. Either the next step in personal drones or a sure sign of the selfie trend veering wildly out of control, Nixie is a little wrist-mounted camera that will detach when your arm is flicked and fly away so you can record yourself doing… things. That’s your lookout, we’re not going to ask any questions about it.

We’re exaggerating about the selfie trend running amok of course, that already happened some time ago. But Nixie, a finalist in Intel’s Make It Wearable Challenge, is actually a pretty novel idea that comes across more as a Bond gadget rather than something that you’d find the average person wearing. And since 007 has all the best toys, that can only be a good thing.

According to Nixie’s Christoph Kohstall, users will be able to use a gesture to launch the little drone.

“Then it’s going to take off from your wrist. It knows where you are, it turns around, takes a picture of you, comes back. You can catch it from the air and put it back on your wrist.”

Which sounds pretty nifty to us. There are other finalists in the Intel Make It Wearable Challenge, but this is one that has really caught our eye. Should it win, and we’ll know that come November this year, the team behind Nixie will get the sum of $500,000 to complete their drone/wrist device ambitions.
