iWatch will have NFC, wireless charging and a flexible sapphire glass display

Apple’s 9 September event is drawing near – and it’s widely expected to debut its first wearable device, the rumoured iWatch.

As the launch event approaches, loose lips have revealed more details of the iWatch’s rumoured spec sheet; according to the Wall Street Journal‘s “people familiar with the matter,” the iWatch will come with a near-field communication (NFC) chip for information transfer and contactless payment.

Claims of Apple creating a new payment platform for the looming iPhone 6 have been doing the rounds for a while now; it’s a fairly safe bet that if the iWatch features an NFC chip, the same tap-to-pay functionality will be extended to Apple’s smartwatch, too.

The New York Times‘ sources claim that the iWatch will also include wireless charging capabilities, after Apple apparently tested a number of other charging options that included solar charging. They also provide the first clue to the device’s size; it won’t be too bulky, since its processor will be the “size of a postage stamp” – and report that it will be almost entirely scratch-resistant thanks to a flexible display that’s clad in sapphire glass.

As for its software, the iWatch will reportedly be heavily integrated with features of iOS 8, such as HealthKit and Handoff. But we’ll have to be patient before we can get our hands on the device; it seems that we won’t be seeing the iWatch hit retail stores until 2015.

Along with the iWatch, Apple’s expected to reveal a 4.7in iPhone 6 and a 5.5in “iPhone 6L” at its imminent event. Hang in there, we’re only days away from finding out exactly what Apple has in store for us.
