According to the source, Apple might launch a “mid 2014 Mac Mini” and a “mid 2014 27-inch iMac”, though word of their arrival hasn’t been officially confirmed. Almost as soon as the listings were put up they were pulled down, but that didn’t stop sources such as 9to5Mac and other Apple blogs catching wind of it. Well, we think it’s about time Apple looked into refreshing its Mac Mini and iMac range.
Moving forward with technology
The Mac Mini was last upgraded in October 2012 – clearly, it’s crying out for a refresh. It featured a 2.5GHz dual-core Intel i5 processor, 500GB of storage and 4GB of RAM. Sources claim the new Mac Mini will boast faster speeds, along with upgrades to its ports (to USB 3.0 and Thunderbolt 2) and improved 802.11a/c Wi-Fi for better connectivity.
The iMac, meanwhile, hasn’t had a proper upgrade for almost a year: new Intel Haswell-equipped 21.5in and 27in models were launched in September 2013. There was a 21.5in iMac launched in June but it’s couldn’t be described as an upgrade – instead it’s a cheaper and more basic alternative to the models that were already available.
So the new iMac, which is listed to be 27in, will most likely just have its quad-core 3.2GHz Intel i5 with 1TB of storage and 8GB of RAM internals tweaked. But there’s no way of knowing Apple’s plans for sure until it actually reveals them.
