Samsung’s Galaxy S5 Mini is now a thing – as if there was any doubt

Everyone knew that this one was on the way, it was just a matter of time before an announcement was made. Samsung has gone official on the Galaxy S5 Mini, dropping the specs and capabilities for the device on a hardly-surprised world a little earlier today.

The miniature Galaxy S5 will be seeing a drop in specs, something else that isn’t exactly unexpected. The display is shrinking to a 4.5-inch 720p screen, a 1.4GHz quad-core chip is taking over from the Snapdragon 801 in Samsung’s full-sized phone and RAM is taking a slight dip: down from 2GB to 1.5GB.

The camera is getting similarly downscaled, to an 8MP shooter, and users will have 16GB of storage to play with. But Samsung have opted to hang onto most of the sensors and other bits. The heart rate monitor, fingerprint scanner and ambient light sensors are sticking around with the S5 Mini, as is the water-resistant IP67 rating. So at least you’ll be able to drop this little thing in the bath a few times.

First to get the stripped-down S5 is Russia, who will see the phone hit stores in the middle of this month. Pricing and availability in other regions will be made known at a later stage so stick around. We’ll have that info for you as soon as it’s available.
