Nest adds a few more branches, purchasing home monitoring company DropCam

Google acquired smart-device maker Nest a short while ago and now Nest is adding a few more feathers by doing some acquiring of their own. According to a post on the Nest website, the company is busy acquiring an outfit called DropCam, which specialises in home monitoring gear.

No specifics are available are available concerning what Nest (and, by extension, Google) wants with DropCam. DropCam makes and sells hardware which allows people to keep an eye on what is going on at home while in other locations, with night-vision and two-way radio over Wifi being features of their products.

According to Nest nothing will be changing at the company for the present, but eventually “…the plan is for us to work together to reinvent products that will help shape the future of the conscious home and bring our shared vision to more and more people around the world”

Nest’s announcement doesn’t detail what they’re going to be paying for the monitoring company, though several reports have stated that DropCam will cost Nest $555 million – not quite as extravagant as what Google paid for Nest recently. The purchase makes sense though, Nest already has a foot in the home with their thermostats and smoke alarms, a home-monitoring video camera with interactive features would be right up their alley.
