Panasonic unveils their take on a 4K recording compact camera

Behold Panasonic’s Lumix FZ1000, which is, according to the company, “the world’s first digital compact camera” able to record video in 4K.

In terms of 4K capabilities, the FZ1000 will be able to shoot at 30fps when using maximum resolution, and 60fps when you tone it down to 1080p. When shooting in normal HD, you will have the added capability of using the FZ’s five-axis optical image stabilization, which should come in handy when shooting for extended periods of time, but it seems that this option won’t be available in 4K.
You will also get a host of video effects to use in the FZ’s ‘creative video’ mode, like high-speed 120fps recording, stop motion animation and time lapse video recording.

In terms of photography, the FZ1000 has all the usual accoutrements, from scene selection, photo filters and a burst mode that snaps 12 photos per second at full resolution. Added to that are features most camera manufacturers undoubtedly feel are must-haves for cameras, namely Wi-Fi and NFC, so you can upload you photos as you take them, or interface with your smartphone.

Although the camera doesn’t look anything close to what we would consider a compact camera, it does come with a nifty price, considering its recording capabilities. The FZ1000 will hit US shelves in July for R9650 (prices only accurate for time of writing), with no word out yet for South African availability.
