Sony’s RX100 has been around for a couple of years but it has managed to stay fresh thanks to hardware updates by the company. If this hasn’t been a bit of a giveaway, Sony has updated the RX100 again to the RX100 III. The changes are not very cosmetic, it looks much the same as its predecessors but there’s something a bit different hiding on the inside.
If that is the case, bring on the changes. Sony’s revamped RX100 III is packing the same sensor as the RX100 II – that is the 20.1MP Exmor R CMOS. There’s a bit of mixing and matching going on though, Sony’s Alpha A77 II’s image processor, the Bionz X, is jumping into the RX100 III.
There’s a new lens on the way as well, the 24-70mm, f/1.8-f/2.8 Zeiss Vario-Sonnar T. That should make for some improvement in general image capture terms but the company has also upgraded the RX100’s video recording capabilities. It will record in XAVC S format, a faster form of 1080p video capture according to Sony.
There’s also an OLED electronic viewfinder coming, with WiFi and NFC support and Sony are setting up the new RX100 to capture images at 4K resolutions. When can we expect it? It’ll launch overseas next month, priced at $800 (R8,400).
