BlackBerry has revealed their first new smartphone in a while and it’s heading to Indonesia tomorrow. Unfortunately for BB fans, that’s the only place that it’s headed for the near future but a major clue about that is in the device’s name. Called the BlackBerry Z3 – Jakarta Edition, will feature a bunch of content aimed directly at Indonesia.
The Z3’s specifications mark it as a lower-end phone than the company is used to releasing, with a 1.2GHz dual-core processor and 1.5GB of system memory being the brains behind this operation. The Z3 will feature a 5-inch 540 x 960 touchscreen display, microSD support and 8GB of native storage and BB10 OS controlling all of the hardware. BlackBerry have included a 2,500mAh battery and there are a collection of Indonesia-specific software features being released.
Users will have access to a collection of BBM Stickers made for the country as well as a Bahasa touchscreen keyboard.
For a low-cost device from BlackBerry, it still works out rather pricy by costing the local equivalent of R2,000 per phone. It’s not anywhere near R5k a phone though, so a local release of the Z3 might go over quite well.
The ‘Jakarta Edition’ suffix, though BlackBerry hasn’t made any indications of this, could point towards other customised released of the Z3 in countries where BlackBerry still enjoys a strong following. It’s not outside the realm of possibility to think that BlackBerry might have a Z3 – South African Edition tucked away in their release schedule somewhere.
