MTN has got its eye set on delivering fibre to South African homes, demonstrating the FTTH technology earlier this month to residents of Monaghan Farm, a Johannesburg gated community. MTN claims that, during the test on 12 April, speeds of their fibre to the home setup hit a peak of 150.2Mbps.

MTN says that Monaghan Farm will be connected by the middle of May, at speeds varying between 10Mbps and 100Mbps depending on the subscriber but, come June this year, the company will be targeting other “…high-density urban areas, such as high-end gated communities, boomed-off suburbs and high-rise buildings” with FTTH as well.

MTN hasn’t mentioned specific pricing, though it will vary according to how much work that MTN has to put in to connect residences to a fibre network in terms of infrastructure. Instead, the company says that pricing will be determined on a “case-by-case basis”. While it will most likely be expensive, even for South Africa, speeds of 100Mbps might just be worth it.

MTN’s Mike Fairon, MTN SA’s General Manager of Products and Services, said “What I look forward to the most, is how Fibre-to-the-Home opens up the door to making the Connected Home a reality.”
