Nokia-Microsoft deal is final month-end, Nokia Device to become Microsoft Mobile

Microsoft will be completing its acquisition of Nokia, thanks to the final hurdle of regulatory approval being passed earlier this month, by Friday, 25 April. The deal was supposed to conclude nearer the beginning of this year but it will finally be completing this month.

Ars Technica reports that Nokia will be undergoing some changes once the deal is finalised. Microsoft will be taking over the Finnish company’s online presence, both on the web proper and in the social media sphere, for at least a year. Some employees in Nokia’s Chief Technology Office, based in China, will be transferring over the Microsoft while a South Korean manufacturing facility will remain under Nokia’s aegis instead of being transferred to Redmond.

It also looks as though a name change is in the works for Nokia Device, according to a letter that was sent through to NokiaPowerUser. The letter, which was reportedly sent to Nokia’s suppliers, claims that “…upon the close of the transaction between Microsoft and Nokia, the name of Nokia Corporation/Nokia Oyj will change to Microsoft Mobile Oy.”

If the name change is on the cards, it shouldn’t make a whole lot of difference to the products that either company has been releasing but brand awareness might take a bit of a hit if Microsoft Mobile takes over from Nokia in the public eye. Still, Microsoft appears to have left themselves enough time to make everyone aware of a possible change.
