Samsung announces its own smart light bulb

LG did it earlier this week so of course it is now Samsung’s turn to trot out a smart light bulb. The South Korean company plans on revealing a new smart light bulb at the Light + Building 2014 trade fair in Germany early next week but they have revealed a few details about the product, simply dubbed the Smart Bulb, a little early.

According to Samsung, the Smart Bulb will use Bluetooth in order to communicate with non-LED devices, allowing users to connect to and control the lighting using a smartphone or a tablet. No interconnection equipment will be required.

Users will be able to dim and otherwise control the Samsung lighting via an app and Samsung is claiming a lifespan of 15,000 hours for each bulb, which works out to about ten years (unless Eskom is controlling your power in which case we give them a week).

The company hasn’t priced or hinted at availability of the Smart Bulb but there should be an updated announcement next week. We’ll keep you posted.
