Samsung’s Galaxy S 5 makes its appearance at MWC 2014

Samsung’s Unpacked event last night saw the reveal of the Galaxy S 5 handset, as expected. Samsung’s JK Shin says that the new smartphone will be “…going back to basics to focus on delivering the capabilities that matter most to our consumers” and the specs for the newly-revealed device seem to reflect that.

Samsung have opted to outfit the Galaxy S 5 with a 5.1-inch Super ALOLED display (full HD, of course) and a quad-core processor running at 2.5GHz, the specifics of which Samsung hasn’t provided just yet. 2GB of system memory, a choice of 16GB or 32GB of storage and microSD support round out the rest of the basic features but it’s that upgraded processor that we’re really interested in.

The Galaxy S 5 has a range of other new features that should excited more than a few fans. The company is including a 16MP rear camera with the more conventional 2MP front-facer and the handset will be rated IP67 (dust and water resistant). The S 5 will also have something called an Ultra Power Saving Mode and a download booster. S Health 3.0,  a Private mode and a whole lot of connectivity options will all be baked into the device when it launches in April this year.
