We’re missing the hoverboard but self-lacing shoes might just happen

Many a Back to the Future fan has looked at the calendar with utter dismay, as flying cars are still very noticeably not part of our everyday life. At least one peace of futuristic kit from the film that did see the light of day were the 1 500 pairs of Nike Air Mag sneakers that the company auctioned off in 2011 for the Michael J. Fox Foundation.

Although a step in the right direction – the sneakers were kitted with a glowing LED panel, electroluminescent Nike logo and a battery that kept everything nice and futuristic, it lacked the very iconic auto-lacing feature seen in the film but at least you could have had a pair of shoes that needed charging. Now, the missing piece may be on its way.

It was Sole Collector who queried whether the feature would finally be coming to Nike, whose brand was used for the fictional sneakers, and they reportedly received an answer from Nike designer Tinker Hatfield: “Are we gonna see power laces in 2015? To that, I say YES!” Whether he’s serious isn’t confirmed but Sole Collector seems rather confident that Hatfield isn’t kidding around.

So in summation, no flying cars (yet), but at least power laces might be a possibility. Now let’s get them working on that hoverboard.
