This year, Intel will shed over 5,000 jobs

Intel might be shipping out a new crop of Bay Trail processors to a selection of Android tablets (good news) but the company will also be shedding more than 5,000 jobs this year, according to Intel spokesman Chris Kraeuter.

Kraeuter, speaking to Reuters, said that the planned cuts are “…part of aligning our human resources to meet business needs”.

The loss of the more than 5,000 staff represents 5% of the company’s workforce, though the company has said that retirement and other options may form part of the layoffs. Intel also added that they typically lose about 4% of their global workforce annually.

The announcement, which came shortly after what seemed to be a largely positive earnings report, will see Intel moving resources from still-ailing PCs to more profitable areas.
