Meet Airtame, a crowdfunded device that lets you mirror most computer screens elsewhere

Airtame is a new project from a Danish company that has popped on over to the IndieGoGo crowdfunding platform to get a little funding. Of the $160,000 that they were looking for, they’ve secured a little over $233,000 with another three weeks to go to fund the Airtame. So why are people so keen on the device?

Because Airtame is an HDMI dongle that allows users to mirror a computer display on almost any display type, wirelessly. It functions across the major computing platforms, supporting Windows, Linux and Mac, and will output to anything with an HDMI input. Users will be able to wirelessly send video streams from a Mac (or just about anything else that has a WiFi signal) to a TV, monitor or even a projector.

The Airtame dongle is the only bit of hardware involved and that is plugged into the output device’s HDMI input. The rest of the work is taken care of by the Airtame app, which must be installed on the source of the image transmission.

There are some limitations to the device at the moment, it’s unable to mirror displays from smartphones and tablets yet, though the creators say that it is possible to do if the tablet or smartphone is jailbroken. They’ve opted to stick to vanilla operating systems for now, though they don’t seem to have issues with others giving it a shot on their own. Since the project is already funded, odds are we’ll be seeing Airtame in the very near future and then we can find out for ourselves what is possible.
