Microsoft’s Xbox One, like Sony’s PlayStation 4, has seen release in a restricted section of the global market and, also like the PS4, has surpassed 1 million sales in its first 24 hours on sale.
Microsoft’s new console has beaten first day sales numbers seen by the Xbox 360, according to Microsoft, which makes this “the biggest launch in Xbox history.” The Xbox One’s initial rollout saw sales taking place in 13 countries and the uptake prompted Yusuf Mehdi, Xbox’s Corporate Vice President of Marketing and Strategy, to say “We are humbled and grateful for the excitement of Xbox fans around the world. Seeing thousands of excited fans lined up to get their Xbox One and their love for gaming was truly a special moment for everyone on the Xbox team. We are working hard to create more Xbox One consoles and look forward to fulfilling holiday gift wishes this season.”
It can be argued that Sony’s PlayStation 4 has had the better launch so far, as PS4 sales figures for day one consisted only of North American purchases. The console has yet to launch in Europe or Africa and, while some locations will be passed over by the Xbox One for a while yet, Microsoft’s console has had a wider sales area with which to make its more than 1 million units sold milestone happen. This means very little in the long run though, we’ll have to wait until more complete sales data becomes available for both consoles before we’re able to speculate about who is leading the console race.
