Nintendo’s financials show a loss in spite of improved hardware sales

Japanese gaming hardware and software developer Nintendo have released the details of their latest quarter and while there have been improvements in the area of hardware sales, the company still posted a loss for the period.

There have been improved sales of Nintendo’s Wii U console following a price drop earlier this year but the hardware numbers have only climbed by another 300,000 new users over the period. This is almost double Nintendo’s Wii U sales for the previous quarter (160,000) but is far outmatched by sales of the 3DS and 3DS XL for the past quarter.

The two handhelds shifted another 2 million units over the period, taking the lifetime sales of Nintendo’s smaller console to 35 million. Those are numbers that Nintendo wishes that the Wii U had. Engadget reports that Nintendo put the current quarter loss of about $82 million at the new living-room console’s door, saying “Wii U hardware still has a negative impact on Nintendo’s profits.”
