AMD finally turns a profit, thanks to PS4, Xbox One

AMD may have been down but it seems that they are not out just yet. The company has reported its results for the third quarter of 2013 and the news is good for the chip manufacturer, at least in the short term.

AMD has managed to turn a profit for the first time in over a year, securing a net income of $48 million compared to a net loss of $157 million a year ago. It’s a fairly large turnaround from Q2 2013, which saw the company post a loss of $74 million.

The reason for its return to the black is some cause for happiness in AMD but it’s unfortunately not a long-term thing. AMD’s semicustom chips, specifically those which are being used to power the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, are one of the main causes of the company’s return to profitability. In spite of a drop in notebook and chipset shipments, the semi-custom and GPU section of the company saw a 96% increase year-on-year.

While AMD still has some game console royalties to look forward to, this boost can’t sustain the company forever or even until the next time a game console is released. At the moment AMD has a little space to work in and the company is expecting slight growth for the last quarter of 2013.
