Mercedes demos an upcoming autonomous S-500

Mercedes-Benz have released a video of a prototype S-Class Merc driving itself across through a wide range of areas, from rural to urban. The vehicle, called the S-500 Intelligent Drive, is only part of a test for upcoming autonomous cars from the motor manufacturer but the 100 kilometer drive is a positive step towards a self-driving car.

The car navigated traffic circles, traffic lights, corners and actual traffic during the test, though there was a Mercedes engineer behind the wheel in case something went wrong. The S-500 Intelligent Drive uses a combination of cameras, sensors, and radar in order to see where it is on the road so that it can act or react accordingly.

Mercedes-Benz is apparently looking at a 2020 released date for autonomous vehicles, meaning that they’ve still go a few years of testing ahead of them.
