Gauteng’s cellular network gets R200 million worth of love from Cell C

Mobile service provider Cell C will be rolling out R200 million worth of network infrastructure upgrades in Gauteng in the upcoming months, the company said in a statement.

There are another 100 coverage sites due to come online in the next three months, nineteen of which will be active in the province before then end of August. These sites, plus an extra 70 indoor cellular sites, will be joining the existing 959 Johannesburg coverage locations.

Cell C CEO Alan Knott-Craig said in a press statement “Traffic on our network has doubled over the past year and we’ve been hard at work rolling out new sites and installing additional capacity to cater for this growth and restore quality.”

“In particular, the network in Johannesburg and Pretoria has been taking strain. In addition to the new sites, we have also embarked on a project to optimise close to 900 existing sites in Johannesburg and Pretoria to improve coverage and minimise interference on the network in high-density areas. We expect these activities to be completed by the end of November 2013.”

Cell C says that the Gauteng upgrades are just be beginning for the company’s efforts and that they will “…continue to roll out new sites, upgrade and optimise existing sites and add additional capacity across [Cell C’s] network nationally.”
