The Oculus Rift, a Kinect, a bicycle and a paperboy walk into a bar…

The Kickstarted Oculus Rift virtual reality headset has been put to some interesting uses already but a company called Globacore have decided to use the multi-talented headset to recreate something out of gaming’s past.

Based on the classic delivery game Paperboy, PaperDude VR makes use of an Oculus Rift headset, a stationary bicycle, a Kinect sensor pillaged from an Xbox 360 and a Kickr Power Trainer. The Kinect tracks arm motions, letting players throw newspapers into letterboxes (or through windows, at obstacles and anywhere else your aim decides it should go), the Kickr tracks player forward motion through the in-game setting on an iPad and the Oculus Rift, of course, puts all of this into a first-person perspective.

It may not be the most high-spec visual update of Paperboy but it is almost certainly the most technological. It almost makes Stuff want to break out that old Nintendo console and lob some newspapers at neighborhood dogs for old times sake but we’ll settle for a crack at Globacore’s PaperDude VR as well.
