Apple’s App Store passes 50 billion app downloads

Apple’s App Store has hit yet another milestone, shaving off about three years from their previous best time. It took around 4 years for Apple’s App Store to reach the 25 billion download mark, breaching that total last year. Now, a little over a year later, Apple has doubled their app download total to 50 billion.

The 50 billionth app downloaded was Say the Same Thing, an iOS game, and the downloader, one Brandon Ashmore from Ohio, was given a $10,000 App Store Gift Card by Apple to commemorate the event.

Apple’s senior vice president of Internet Software and Services Eddie Cue said in a statement “Apple would like to thank our incredible customers and developers for topping 50 billion apps downloaded. The App Store completely transformed how people use their mobile devices and created a thriving app ecosystem that has paid out over nine billion dollars to developers. We’re absolutely floored to cross this milestone in less than five years.”
