BBM to make the jump to Android and iOS later this year

BlackBerry CEO Thorsten Heins, speaking at this year’s BlackBerry Live, has announced that the company’s BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) will be appearing on a couple of new platforms, namely Android and iOS, later on this year.

Heins said “It is a state of confidence. The BB10 platform is so strong and the response has been so good that the time is right for BBM to become an independent mobile messaging platform.”

The messaging service will become available in ‘summer’ as an app, free of charge, but it will require either iOS 6 or Android 4 Ice Cream Sandwich to function. At first only the messaging and group functions for BBM will be available, followed later by other BlackBerry-specific features.
