Sony has a new prototype e-ink device along with a stylus that is intended to be used in learning institutions, seemingly as a substitute for the standard pen and paper that students are (probably) familiar with.
The prototype device, which is still in testing and will remain there likely until the end of the year, features a 13.3-inch electromagnetic induction touchscreen display (1,200 x 1,600) that matches the size of A4 paper pages. The touchscreen will be used for navigating menus and scrolling through PDF files while the stylus will be used to make notes on those PDF documents.
Sony’s experimental hardware is, at present, 6.8mm thick and weighs 385 grams and features 4GB of onboard storage with a microSD card expansion slot built in. It also has WiFi access, which will apparently allow for note-sharing. The prototype has an estimated 3 weeks worth of powered-on time in the battery, with WiFi off. The specs are obviously subject to change until Sony actually gets this e-ink tool into stores.
