BlackBerry 10.1 update to add HDR photo support, PIN-to-PIN messaging

BlackBerry has, through the release of the release of a new software development kit (SDK), let slip some details of the first major update for the BlackBerry 10 operating system.

Among the notable changes is the addition of HDR (high dynamic range) support for photographs, something that is already a feature on other smartphones like Sony’s Xperia Z and the iPhone 5.

PIN-to-PIN messaging is apparently also making a comeback with the update. The messaging system allowed users to message people not on their contact lists, provided they had the recipient’s PIN. The feature was dropped for BlackBerry 10 but it seems that it is being put back. In addition, the update will allow users to unlock their phones using the power button as well as (or instead of) the current gesture-based system.

There is no word on when the update will be made available to the general public, at the moment it is reserved for developers and the very brave.
