How does BlackBerry’s Z10 measure up to the rest of the competition?

BlackBerry’s Z10 touchscreen smartphone is going up some extremely stiff competition, particularly Apple’s iPhone 5 and Samsung’s flagship Galaxy S3.

Sony’s newest flagship device, the Xperia Z, will also boast improved specs that might give the established leaders a run for their money, meaning that the Z10 will have to stack up against Sony’s latest when it releases.

With that in mind we’ve put together the specs for BlackBerry’s newly-announced handsets and compared them to some of the main competition the Z10 and Q10 will face in the smartphone arena.

Device Dimensions Weight Display CPU Storage RAM Camera
BlackBerry Z10 130 x 66 x 9mm 135g 4.2in/10.6cm, 355ppi, 768 x 1280 Dual-core 1.5 GHz Krait 16GB 2GB 8MP, 3264 x 2448

iPhone 5 124 x 59 x 8 mm 112g 4in/10.1cm, 326ppi, 640 x 1136 Dual-core 1.2 GHz Apple A6 16/32/64GB 1GB 8MP, 3264 x 2448
Samsung Galaxy S3 137 x 71 x 9 mm 133g 4.8in/12.1cm, 306ppi, 720 x 1280 Quad-core 1.4 GHz Cortex-A9 16/32/64GB 1GB 8MP, 3264 x 2448
Samsung Galaxy S3 Mini 122 x 63 x 10 mm 112g 4in/10.1cm, 233ppi, 480 x 800 Dual-core 1 GHz Cortex-A9 8/16GB 1GB 5MP, 2592 x 1944
Sony Xperia Z 139 x 71 x 8 mm 146g 5in/12.7cm, 441ppi, 1080 x 1920 Quad-core 1.5 GHz Krait 16GB 2GB 13.1 MP, 4128 x 3096

On paper the Z10 is only outclassed on the display front by Sony’s Xperia Z, which has a far higher pixel density. It isn’t the lightest of phones either but only comes in a few grams heavier than the Galaxy S3. As far as cameras go the Z10 is on par with most of the field, with the Xperia Z outshining the entire lineup while the mid-ranged processor (compared to the listed devices) and 2GB of RAM should have it comparing favourably in the performance stakes. Of course, an on-paper comparison is no indication of real-world performance but Stuff will have the BlackBerry Z10 review live soon that will provide some insight as to whether the competition should be worried.
