The netbook’s time comes to an end

A Digitimes report which cites Asustek’s recent announcement that their EEE PC line has been shuttered as of the end of 2012 indicates that the netbook is stepping aside to let tablets through.

Asustek and Acer were, up till the end of 2012, the only two companies still producing and selling netbooks but Asustek’s announcement taken along with a lack of plans for new netbooks from Acer means that once the available stock from the two companies has been consumed, the netbook will have had its day.

According to Digitimes Intel’s Atom series of processors will be retained despite the loss of the netbook platform, being diverted instead to embedded platforms like point of sale and digital signage.
