Windows 8 code finalised, released to manufacturers

Microsoft said yesterday that Windows 8’s code has been finalised and that the new OS has been sent to OEM manufacturers to be loaded onto PCs. Windows 8 is expected to drop on 26 October.

Microsoft also said that developers can, as of yesterday, begin offering paid apps on the Windows Store where previously only free applications were permitted. Presumably this includes tablet as well as desktop apps, in preparation for the launch of Windows Surface on the same day as Windows 8.

Windows 8 constitutes the largest changes made to the Windows operating system from Microsoft, aiming to popularise “Metro-style apps” over traditional desktop applications. Intel and AMD-based systems will still support older applications but Windows RT will be optimised for the Metro type of program.
