OpenAI rolls out GPTs, a homebrew version of ChatGPT

A few examples of custom GPTs

GPTs are the next big thing from ChatGPT developer OpenAI, revealed at the company’s very first developers conference held earlier this week. This isn’t a whole new thing from the artificial intelligence company but rather a fresh take on what they currently offer.

OpenAI‘s DevDay saw two rather interesting announcements. GPTs, which we’ll get to, and ‘GPT-4 Turbo‘ which will be of more interest to the people who actually attended, like developers, who have incorporated ChatGPT in their workflow. The latter amounts to a few improvements to the company’s GPT large language model (LLM) – basically, it’s much better now with a larger context window and a bigger dataset. You can wade through the specifics here.

You can’t have GPT-4 Turbo, we have GPTs at home

GPTs, on the other hand, are aimed squarely at regular folks like you. Well, not you specifically. If you’re reading Stuff then you’re probably a peg or two higher than ‘regular’. This new feature allows the creation of custom chatbots like ChatGPT.

“GPTs are a new way for anyone to create a tailored version of ChatGPT to be more helpful in their daily life, at specific tasks, at work, or at home,” the company explained. “For example, GPTs can help you learn the rules to (sic) any board game, help teach your kids math, or design stickers.”

You don’t even need a degree or any coding background to make your very own GPT models.

“You can make them for yourself, just for your company’s internal use, or for everyone. Creating one is as easy as starting a conversation, giving it instructions and extra knowledge, and picking what it can do, like searching the web, making images or analyzing data.”

The new feature is already available to test with a few example GPTs. Unfortunately, only ChatGPT Plus and Enterprise users have access to those for now, but OpenAI did say it plans “to offer GPTs to more users soon.” It wasn’t made clear exactly when that’ll be so keep your eyes open.
