6 podcasts for your business brain

podcast

Podcasts are an excellent way to consume business-related information, insights, ideas, warnings, and much more, and there are a ton of them business enthusiasts could tune in to. What’s so great about them is you can get the benefit of others’ experiences in business so that you can (hopefully) avoid the mistakes they made and make your business the best it can be.

We’ve rounded up a handful of business podcasts that you can listen to today; some are taken from South African radio shows, while others are international shows that cover business in general.

If you like listening to people speaking while you exercise, drive to and from work, or on long business trips, you’ll love these.

Note: Some of the South African podcasts on this list are available from a service called Player.fm which is an app you can download to your smartphone, where you can browse podcasts and create playlists. Alternatively, you can just follow the links on this page and play the shows you’re interested in directly from the Player.fm website.

The Money Show

Stay abreast of the day’s money-related developments by tuning in to Bruce Whitfield’s The Money Show. The day’s radio show is available as a podcast shortly after it is broadcast live on Radio 702/CapeTalk at 6 PM on weekdays, making it convenient to listen to if you’re not free when it’s live.

The show covers many financial topics of interest to business professionals in South Africa and is always worth a listen thanks to Whitfield’s deep knowledge of the finance sector, made all the better by his excellent delivery.

StartUp podcast

This one isn’t South African, but it’s a pretty entertaining business podcast series that started back in 2014 that any aspiring businessperson can learn from. Calling itself a “documentary series about entrepreneurial life”, the tagline is “A show about what it’s really like to start a business”, and it features plenty of content that covers the entrepreneurial lifestyle.

The first two seasons deal with starting businesses from the perspective of people who didn’t know much about it going in, while the third season focuses on one business per episode (which is probably the best place to start if you’re just looking for something fun but self-contained to listen to).

Listen to it on Spotify, or from the Gimlet Media website.

TED Business

You’ve heard of TED talks; now, TED Business takes the idea of people talking about ideas and focuses it on business-related topics that are then packaged up as individual podcasts. There are quite a few topics to choose from if you’re in the mood to browse, or you can just subscribe to the series and let Spotify or Apple’s algorithms cue up random episodes for you. No matter what you end up listening to, you’re sure to learn something new and interesting.
