Games are massive. Just look at the incoming Mortal Kombat 1 (or 29?) which boasts that it’ll need at least 100GB of space before you can get going. That’s nothing compared to the original Warzone install. Activision’s game needs close to 175GB of valuable hard drive space on the PC (via ArsTechnica). Modern-day consoles can’t keep up with the games they’re pumping out and Microsoft’s latest announcement of a new Xbox Series S proves just that.
Xbox goes back in time
Say hello to the Carbon Black Xbox Series S, a ‘new’ console that’ll come loaded up with 1TB of storage and start at $350 (though what that’ll translate to in South Africa is a mystery) at launch. That’s important because the price of the Carbon Black Xbox is $30 cheaper than the standard 512GB model with an accompanying 512GB expansion card.
If you’re hoping for something new in the hardware department (other than the new 1TB SSD), you’ll be disappointed. The big change here, as the name suggests, is Microsoft’s go-to move of spray-painting a black finish onto the shell and calling it a day. Sound familiar?

The Carbon Black Xbox Series S is currently slated for a 1 September 2023 release date – just in time for Starfield. Pre-orders have already opened, with Microsoft confirming that it’ll be updating its retailers and region list soon. South Africa is just waiting on more news and official pricing.
